The published dates are unique to each volume. 8vo. Approx. 8 1/4". Vol I: 1788, xi, erratta, 10-panel fold-out map, 450pp. Vol II: 1791, iv, 528pp. Fir…st edition. In brown cross-hatched leather boards with narrow gilt edging to borders on front and back panels. Five flat panels on spines, all ornately edged in gilt and with gilt lettering. Gilt dentelles to outermost board edges. External page edges are age- and soil-darkened. Boards and spine are scuffed and with small stains. Marbled end papers. Bookplate of W. J. Trower on both front paste downs. Text pages are age-toned, faintly foxed and with an occasional smudge but otherwise clean and very legible. Vol I: Front board panel and FFEP is separated from text block. Back spine fold is partially cracked 1 1/2" - 2" at the head and tail. Corners and edge at head of spine is chipped, headband is secure. Previous owner's name on FFEP. Title page is a bit grubby in general. A few random pencilled margin notes. Other than the separated front board panel, text block is secure. Vol II: Upper edge at head of board spine is chipped and split; front corner at head of spine has a 1" vertical crack down the front spine fold. Front corner at tail of spine has a 5/8" partial crack but holding. Gutter crack at verso to FFEP and blank page; previous owner's name/date on upper right corner of this page. Heavier foxing to title page and petering out by page 25. Text block is secure. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition descriptions.
