First Edition. pp1-56A adverts, 214pp, pp57-104 adverts, photogravure portrait of Queen Victoria, with tissue, and 43 black & white illustrations by various artists, including Sir Edmund Burne Jones, Sir Frederick Leighton and Gustave Dore, includes a history of Crathie parish church and an account of the laying of a foundation stone for a new church by Queen Victoria on September 11th 1893, and a title page with the title "Book of the Bazaar, September 4th and 5th 1894", articles and poems by various authors, including the Marquis of Lorne, The Duchess of Sutherland, Jerome K Jerome and Rudyard Kipling, free endpapers tanned, original gilt-decorated green cloth with bevelled edges, gilt spine lettering and lettering to upper board, top edge gilt, other edges uncut, binding a little loose with weak front joint, otherwise a very good copy. A handsome volume to raise funds for the new Crathie Church. It shows how an association with royalty attracts a wide variety of support. Size: Quarto. Miscellany.

Features 105 pp. of full-page, wonderfully graphic bw advertisements divided between front and rear of book. A substantial, heavy volume. Free of marks. Brown cloth boards with gilt decorations and titles. Spine also decorated. Backstrip worn, and pulling away for 4" at head. Corners curled. Hinge break at several places throughout, where signature strings show, although volume remains structurally sound. Pages are clean and quite bright, free of foxing, due to the high quality paper.

Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. small folio, 56pp of ads + 214pp + 48pp of ads, photogravure portrait frontispiece of Queen Victoria, additional illustrated title, 43 b/w plates (all with tissue guards), all pictorial adverts finely designed and printed in blue, adverts and all text within red printed borders, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, bound in contemporary half morocco over green dark green boards, spine lettered and decorated in gilt. A handsome volume and excellent example of Scottish printing with some fine designed pictorial advertisements. Rare is the place in Royal Deeside that escapes Queen Victoria's influence - but even in this land of royal patronage, Crathie, and utterly captivating village, has rather special royal history. The nest cottages that populate this tiny speck of a place were built for the workers of the Balmoral estate. And, to sustain their religious fortitude with the same rigour as the residents maintained the walls of Balmoral itself, a pretty grey granite church was added in 1895. The last resting place of John Brown, Victoria's favourite ghillie, Crathie Church remains, to this day, a royal place of worship.
