Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 350 pages ; 22 cm. In Georgian, with summary in Russian. Includes an English title-page : ["Alphabetic writing and the Old Georgian script : a typology and provenience of alphabetic writing systems"] and a short English abstract on the dustwrapper flaps ["This work deals with theoretical problems of the typology and the origin and development of akphabetic system of writing from its antecedent, a mixed system of 'consonant-syllabic' type represented by the Old Semitic linear script. ..Problems of the origin of the Old Georgian (Iberian) system of writing and determination of its sources are specially discussed. The Old Georgian system of writing is analyzed against the broad typological backround of various sytems of alphabetic script, with reference fo Old Semitic (Phoenician), and Greek systems of writing, as well as to other scripts stemming from the latter two. ..A comparative analysis of the Old Semitic, ancient Greek and Old Georgian systems of script reveals the dependence of the Old Georgian system on the Greek rather than on the Old Semitic system to which Old Georgian script has ordinarily been linked. A comparison of Old Georgian writing with alphabetic writing systems stemming from the Greek prototype, such as Coptic, Gothic, Old Armenian, and Old Slavonic, brings to light inner characterstics of the Old Georgian alphabet and defines its typological place among these systems of the early Christian period.."].…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! An abugida, also called an alphasyllabary, is a segmental writing system which is based on consonants, and in which vowel notation is obligatory but secondary. This contrasts with an alphabet proper, in which vowels have status equal to consonants, and with an abjad, in which vowel marking is absent or optional. (In less formal treatments, all three are commonly called alphabets.) About half the writing systems in the world are abugidas,[citation needed] including the extensive Brahmic family of scripts used in South and Southeast Asia. The term abugida was suggested by Peter T. Daniels in his 1990 typology of writing systems. It is an Ethiopian name of the Ge ez script, ä bu gi da, taken from four letters of that script the way abecedary derives from Latin a be ce de. As Daniels used the word, an abugida contrasts with a syllabary, where letters with shared consonants or vowels show no particular resemblance to each another, and with an alphabet proper, where independent letters are used to denote both consonants and vowels. …
