folio. quarter leather, printed paper over boards. xxvii, 477 pages. Second edition, of which this is in English. Lacking the publisher's cardboard slipcase. This copy with a beautiful calligraphically inscription by Maurits "Huis" Enschedé on the front free endpaper in ink. Spine with a subtle hint of fading, else a near fine copy. An English translation of the original edition of 1908 in Dutch with revisions and notes by Harry Carter with the assistance of Netty Hoeflake. Edited by Lotte Hellinga. Intended as a history of the Enschedé firm, it is also a wonderful contribution to typography in general. Not only is this book an extensive history of typefoundries in the Netherlands, but it also contains various alphabets from five centuries and hundreds of ornaments, type specimens and woodcuts. Also contains a bibliography of related items. Beautifully printed. quarter leather, printed paper over boards.

(slipcase damaged and a bit spotted; leather a bit foxed; else very good) Colophon: "Composed by hand in Romanée, a type designed by Jan van Krimpen, cut by P.H. Rädisch and cast in the typefoundry of Joh. Enschedé en Zonen [.]. The book was bound by Brandt-Weesp [.]. Layout and design by Bram de Does." This is no. [225] of 1500 + L copies. NB: The colophon calls for a portrait in 2 colours, ours is solely printed in black. Revised, translated edition, of the 1908-edition in French: Fonderies de caractères et leur matériel dans les Pays-Bas du XVe au XIXe siècle. WITH the loose-leaf present: a type specimen issued by Jan van Hout, Leiden, between 1593-1597 (of which the original has been lost; this specimen reproduced from a photograph in the Enschedé archives). - heavy book, additional postage may be required.
