8vo (ca. 110 x 180 mm). 4 pp. A bifolium. An extraordinary rarity: a pamphlet of singular historical significance, outlining for the first time in separate form Babeuf's principal ideological points that are regarded as the antecedent of modern Socialism and Communism. The third known copy. - Issued on 11 April 1796 as a wall poster and handbill throughout Paris, these fifteen paragraphs formulate the creed of the "Conspiracy of the Equals", seeking to extend the Revolution's political equality into the social sphere through the abolition of private property and establishment of communal ownership. The opening article states that "Nature has given to every man an equal right to the enjoyment of all goods"; the final paragraph calls for the restoration of the Constitution of 1793. This principal Babouvist document formulates the central tenets of class struggle, the antithesis between the haves and the have-nots, and collective property as a means of achieving "true equality" - ideas later elaborated by Marx and Engels. Its influence extended from the revolutionary cell structure later adopted by 19th-century nationalist groups to Lenin's theory of a disciplined vanguard party. Marx and Engels explicitly acknowledged Babeuf as the precursor of modern communism, describing his conspiracy as the origin of the "revolutionary movement" that gave rise to the "idea of the new world order". - "Both Marx and Engels repeatedly emphasised that Babeuf went beyond the philosophical systems of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution at a very decisive point: while the Industrial Revolution broke out in England, Babeuf relied on communist common property and described private property of any kind as theft. He thought that 'private property is the root of all inequality and thus of injustice. He concluded from this that, in order to achieve justice, private property should be abolished and the common resources produced by individual workers should be redistributed on a purely egalitarian basis, through a centralised state power'" (C. Wimmer, quoting J. Deranty). - A cornerstone in the genealogy of Socialist thought, bridging the French Revolution and Marxist theory. The only other known surviving specimens are held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the University Library of Leiden. - Light age toning; a few contemporary ink annotations to the first page. Edges trimmed irregularly. - Christopher Wimmer, "Rough Communism. On the interpretation of the revolutionary Gracchus Babeuf in Marx and Engels", in: Critique. Journal of Socialist Theory 53.1 (2025), pp. 89-110. OCLC 466181923.

Taschenbuch.
