Handsomely rebound in full brown calf with 5 raised bands and gilt titles to spine in near fine condition. Inside previous owners name to title page(J. J. Duval) all other pages with a little aging and discolouration as to be expected, otherwise in very good condition. An excellent copy of this fascinating book on the rights and status of eunuchs in society, according to the civil and canon law of the time. Scarce.

Primera edición autentica. El autor del qual no aparece su nombre y se escudó en el seudónimo de C[harles] D'ollinca, que es quien firma la dedicatoria a Mr. Bayle, no es otro que Charles Ancillon. El motivo de la publicación fué una pregunta que se le formuló por si habían inconvenientes legales y de tipo social a la boda de un Enuco. Tengase en cuenta que en aquellas fechas habían bastantes músicos castrados, el mismo autor en su intruducción dice: ". l'occasion qui m'y engagé est assez singulière, il y avoit autrefois ici plusieurs Eunuques Italiens, Musiciens, qui y faisoient grosse figure. Ils se flattérent de faire de grandes & d'illustres Conquetês, mais ils se trompérent; nos Dames ne se laisserent point éblouïr, & ne se payérent point de la bagatelle". El último eunuco conocido fué Sun Yaoting, que murió a los 94 años en un templo budista de Pekín (1996), trabajó para el emperador Pu Yi. 10 hojas (marca del editor grabada en la portada), 187 páginas. First edition of this extraordinary treatise on the status of eunuchs in society, according to civil and canon law. Largely based on classical sources, history and (most interestingly) anecdotal evidence from the Orient, Ancillon considers the reasons for the phenomenon (including slavery, household, employment or punishment for sexual misdemeanour). The major contention is that while civil law permits a eunuch to marry, canon law should forbid it (as it did) on the grounds that a marriage could not be consummated. Along the way Ancillon recounts numerous anecdotes of famous eunuchs, notably Abelard, castrated at the instigation of Heloise's family.The book was later translated into English by Robert Samber as part of Edmund Curll's Eunuchism display'd (1718).This copy of Traité des Eunuques is one of at least two issues of the same year with slightly different paginations and title ornaments. The 'Epitre dedicatoire' is signed: 'C. d'Ollincan' an anagram of the author's real name. 12mo (160 × 88 mm), pp. [20], 187, [1], title with woodcut device (an armillary sphere). Quite spotted, title browned. Contemporary mottled sheep, gilt panelled spine, red morocco label. Rubbed, joints cracked but sound. Nineteenth-century bookplate (Docteur Ant[oine Constant] Danyau). Edition originale de ce curieux et érudit traité rédigé par cet avocat protestant à l'occasion du mariage d'un castrat italien. La première partie est une phénoménologie de l'eunuchisme, la seconde est dédiée au problème juridique et moral du mariage des eunuques. Ancillon se prononce sur le droit qu'ont les eunuques de se marier: "(ils) peuvent remplir tous les devoirs du mariage excepté celui de la génération". L'ouvrage est dédié à Pierre Bayle, qui n'eut le temps de recevoir l'hommage car il est mort fin décembre 1706. La dédicace est signée C. D'Ollincan, anagramme de Ch. d'Ancillon.
