Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Tom Swift and His Great Searchlight by Victor Appleton is part of the Tom Swift series of adventure novels aimed at young readers. In this installment, Tom Swift, the inventive and resourceful young protagonist, embarks on an exciting adventure involving the creation and testing of a powerful new searchlight. The plot revolves around Tom's development of an advanced, high-powered searchlight, which he hopes will be useful for a variety of practical applications, including aiding navigation at sea and aiding in rescue missions. Along the way, Tom faces challenges from rival inventors, technical setbacks, and dangerous situations that put his searchlight to the test. As with many books in the Tom Swift series, the novel emphasizes themes of ingenuity, scientific discovery, and perseverance. Tom uses his intelligence and determination to overcome obstacles, and the story showcases his ability to solve problems and invent useful technologies, which ultimately leads to success. The book highlights Tom's courage and his spirit of adventure, characteristic of the series, as he takes on a new scientific challenge. 1.00.

Add to basketDecorative Cloth. Condition: Good +. No Jacket. First Edition. Tom Swift and His Great Searchlight(or, On the Border for Uncle Sam) by Victor Appleton was published by Grosset & Dunlap, Publishers, in 1912. Not an ex-library copy, this 5" X 7 3/8", 100-year-old, 214-page, believed-to-be First Edition offering is in G+ condition. Some webbing is seen between pages 44-45 and 92-93, there is modest yellowing of endpapers front and back as well as text's pages, a previous owner has written "W. Linn", in black ink, on middle-third portion of front loose end page, and there is quite random, light foxing on a not very large number of pages. I checked "Illustrated", but there is but one, in all, that being the volume's black and white Frontispiece, by Artist Unknown, done in the melodramatic, pot-boiler style of the early part of the last century. This is, I believe, the fifteenth installment in Appleton's Tom Swift series, and is, as usual, initially set in suburban Shopton, New York. In the beginning, Tom has it brought to his attention by his closest chum, Ned Newton, that one Andy Foger, an old, frequent nemesis of Tom's who had moved to another town, was seen on the front lawn of his former home in Shopton. Andy has shown a bad habit of trying, on several occasions in the past, to sneak into the boy inventor's shop to get secrets about his various inventions. Indeed, in this story, Tom has just completed work, successfully, on a noiseless airship motor, but has not yet had the chance to patent it completely. Too, Ned and Tom read in the newspaper of a ring of smugglers, based in Canada, who are making forays into New York state, and who quite possibly may have contacts or accomplices right there in Shopton! Gee, do you think that Andy might be in league with the smugglers? Find out, if you so choose, Reader. If you're still reading, you're probably a Tom Swift devotee, or might wish to be. Thank you!!
