Add to basketFirst editions of each title in the authorâs acclaimed Karla Trilogy. Octavo, three volumes, original cloth. From the library of English writer, editor, and broadcaster Edward Anthony Thompson, also known as Anthony Lejeune. Anthony Lejeune was known for his weekly radio talk London Letter that was broadcast in South Africa for nearly 30 years and for his crime novels and writing about the history of London's gentleman's clubs. He also produced a number of political books written from a conservative point of view. Each volume is near fine in a very good dust jacket. John le Carrà 's Karla Trilogy, consisting of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Honourable Schoolboy, and Smiley's People, represents a seminal contribution to the genre of espionage literature. The trilogy is lauded for its complex narrative structure and its deep psychological insight into both its characters and the geopolitical context of the Cold War. Le Carrà 's portrayal of the Soviet intelligence operative Karla and his British counterpart George Smiley is notable for its nuanced exploration of themes such as loyalty, betrayal, and the ethical ambiguities inherent in espionage. The series is acclaimed not only for its intricate plotting and character development but also for its sophisticated critique of the moral and political dimensions of intelligence work, solidifying le Carrà 's reputation as a leading figure in modern literary fiction.

John le Carré aka David Cornwell (1974-79) 'The Karla Trilogy', all UK first editions, first printings, published by Hodder and Stoughton. All are signed and inscribed by the author on the respective title pages. The set consists of: 1) 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy'; signed and inscribed: "For Leon | from John le Carré | 24 ii '99 | Leeds". In fine condition with just the top edge slightly faded. No previous owner's scribbles of any sorts and clean throughout. The dust jacket is NOT faded on the spine as almost always found, NOT clipped. Housed in a solander case produced by the Chelsea Bindery. 2) 'The Honourable Schoolboy'; signed and inscribed: "John le Carré | for | Harry Bracken". This is the rarer variant with blank endpapers, less common than the version with map endpapers. Near fine with Harry Bracken's name on the ffep. The dust jacket is NOT clipped. 3) 'Smiley's People'; signed and inscribed: "John le Carré | for Trevor | with best wishes | 11 Jan 85". In fine condition with no previous owner's scribbles of any sorts. All books are in great condition with light shelf wear only. The Karla Trilogy is probably the greatest achievement of spy fiction to date. A landmark book introducing and popularising an entire spy jargon to readers which is now frequently used in the genre. Largely inspired by the Cambridge Five scandal the books were an immediate success. Adapted into a British TV-series starring the great ALec Guinness, as well as a 2011 Blockbuster film starring Gary Oldman. Signed AND inscribed first editions of the Karla trilogy do not often appear on the market with the majority of specimen being 'flat signed'. Inscribed copies add the little bit of extra handwriting allowing us to verify the signatures as genuine more easily, and they bear more personality. First and Fine. Signed by Author(s).

"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" by John Le Carre. 1974 first UK edition first printing, double-signed by the author "John Le Carré alias David Cornwell - or the other way around!" on title, original boards, dust-jacket, light creasing to head, small patch of laminate lifting at upper joint, faint rubbing to upper and lower edge, but a near-fine example generally. Rare double-signed and in such good condition without the usual fading to spine. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a 1974 spy novel by British-Irish author John le Carré. It follows the endeavours of taciturn, aging spymaster George Smiley to uncover a Soviet mole in the British Secret Intelligence Service. The novel has received critical acclaim for its complex social commentaryand, at the time, relevance, following the defection of Kim Philby. It has been adapted into both a television series and a film, and remains a staple of the spy fiction genre.[2][3] Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was followed by The Honourable Schoolboy in 1977 and Smiley's People in 1979. The three novels together make up the "Karla Trilogy", named after Smiley's long-time opponent Karla, the head of Soviet foreign intelligence and the trilogy's overarching antagonist. In 2022, the novel was included on the "Big Jubilee Read" list of 70 books by Commonwealth authors, selected to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Elizabeth II. Inscribed by Author(s).

Add to basketFirst British edition of the author's seventh novel and what many consider to be his finest. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by author on the title page, "with best wishes John le Carre" and by the author's father, "and much love from his father Ronnie July 1974." Ronald Cornwell was the father of le Carre and was a known associate of the Kray twins. The family was continually in debt. The fatherâ"son relationship has been described as "difficult". Rick Pym, a scheming con man and the father of A Perfect Spy protagonist Magnus Pym, was based on Ronnie. When his father died in 1975, Cornwell paid for a memorial funeral service but did not attend, a plot point repeated in A Perfect Spy. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. An exceptional example, rare and desirable signed by both son and father, this is the first example we have seen. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy garnered instant praise for Le Carre as "[t]he premier spy novelist of his time. Perhaps of all time" (Time). "Le Carre is simply the world's greatest fictional spymaster" (Newsweek). Le Carre's inspiration drew from his experience of the revealing of the Cambridge Five traitors in the 1950s and '60s (Anthony, 2009), and the novel's popularity can be seen in relation to those shocking events. In 2011, the novel was adapted into a successful film, starring Gary Oldman and Colin Firth, and it received three nominations at the 84th Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Actor. This successful production is but one of Le Carre's numerous accolades in espionage fiction. He was awarded both the Helmerich Award and the Goethe Medal, and, in 2008, The Times ranked Le Carré 22nd on its list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945.".

A first edition, first printing published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1974. A fine book with one neat name to the half-title - SIGNED without dedication to the title page by Le Carre. In a fine neatly clipped wrapper WITHOUT fading to the spine. One touch of rubbing to the top of the spine - certainly the best example we have ever handled.
