Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. Thy Servant a Dog, told by Boots and edited by Rudyard Kipling, is a charming and enduringly popular work presented as the first-person narrative of Boots, a devoted Aberdeen terrier. One of Kipling's most warmly received later works, it captures the inner life of a dog with characteristic wit and tenderness, and proved immediately popular on publication. The volume contains three stories: "Thy Servant a Dog," "The Great Play Hunt," and "Toby Dog." This copy is a first edition, first printing, published by Macmillan in October 1930, printed by R. & R. Clark, Limited, Edinburgh. The book is bound in the publisher's original red cloth, blocked in black to the front board and spine with the characteristic image of Boots. The cloth is very good, showing only light wear and some minor fading to the spine ends and corners. The pages are clean and the binding firm. The dust jacket is present, a notable survival for a book of this age, and is good overall, with toning, soiling, and chipping to the head of the spine and corners consistent with nearly a century of age. The rear panel is blank. The jacket is priced at 5/- net to the rear. A pleasing copy of a sought-after Kipling first edition, attractively presented and with the rare survival of its original dust jacket.
