Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Civil War era story with decorative green boards with gilt lettering and floral end pages. Boards with heavy wear; pages very dusty with heavy age toning. John Townsend Trowbridge (1827 - 1916) was an American author born in Ogden, New York. He is today perhaps best remembered for his study The South: A Tour of Its Battlefields and Ruined Cities (1867, republished two years later with additions by another author as A Picture of the Desolated States and the Work of Reconstruction, 1865-1868). Trowbridge toured much of the defeated Confederacy during the summer of 1865 and the following winter. He observed carefully, and talked with a wide variety of people, including freedmen, die-hard Rebels, Unionists, farmers, businessmen, refugees, and Northern entrepreneurs.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. Deep within the forests on the border of a deserted estate belonging to a wealthy secessionist, Federal pickets make themselves at home surrounded by the desolate evidences of war. Yet in this place of conflict and desolation, both sides share common ground - the intense desire to communicate with home and loved ones. Letters are written and entrusted to the dangerous journeys of a few brave soldiers. This book follows the stories of three such messengers and the families on both sides whose lives they touch. Their efforts to cross the lines reveal moving personal stories of bravery, survival, and the resilience of the human spirit. More than just a war story, this book is about human decency and the ways in which ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary things when faced with overwhelming challenges. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
