Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. The books are half-bound in blue morocco over light blue linen boards with five raised bands on the spine and compartments tooled in gilt. Corners are bumped. Volumes I and IV published in 1906 have seen more wear on their spines. For Volume I: the front joint is cracked for three inches down from the top edge and the front hinge is cracked. In Volume IV the back joint is cracked four inches up from the bottom edge; the front joint cracked six inches up from the bottom edge; and the front hinge is cracked at the half title page. The bindings of all four volumes are firm. Volumes II and III published in 1908 are in very good condition with intact joints and hinges. Top edges bright gilt. Deckled fore-edges and bottome edges are age-tanned. Decorative endpapers. Period bookplate of the previous owners on the front paste-downs. The books are illustrated with a total of 37 tissue protected engravings in black and white by French artist Adolphe Lalauze. The there is light tan off-setting on the tissue guards from the illustrations. Otherwise, the pages are clean, smooth and unmarked. Too heavy to ship outside of the United States. Binding is square and tight. Pages are rough cut. Edges of some pages are bent and folded. Pages are clean and bright, free of foreign markings. Corners and edges of boards are bumped and frayed. Wear mostly to the spine. Spine of each volume has insect damage that looks like fading. Lettering is only partially visible on each volume. Volume 1 also has some similar wear to the back cover edges. Volume 2 is 484 pages. Similar condition to volume 1, with slightly more of that insect damage to the front cover. Edges and corners bumped and frayed, spine worn. Pages within are clean and bright. Volume 3 is 512 pages. Front cover is mostly clean with insect damage mostly on the back cover edges and spine. Pages also clean and bright inside. Volume 4 is 508 pages. Damage mostly to the outside edges and the spine. Each volume contains a frontispiece illustration in very good condition. Since these are a set, they will need to be shipped in a box. Extra shipping will be required for international or priority shipping.
