Add to basketHardcover, in dust jacket. First edition, first printing. An unfinished magnum opus of 20th-century critical theory, The Arcades Project is Walter Benjamin's sprawling philosophical excavation of 19th-century Paris as the birthplace of modern consumer culture. Composed as a constellation of fragments, quotations, and reflections, the work defies traditional narrative form, instead constructing a "literary montage" on themes of capitalism, spectacle, urban experience, and historical memory. A foundational text for cultural studies, media theory, and modernist criticism. Owner's inscription, else fine in fine dust jacket, in mylar cover.

"With a greater concreteness than had ever been achieved in historicall narrative, Benjamin's text immerses the reader in the milieu of the Paris arcades--those precursors of today's shopping malls--during the period 1830-1870--when the modern industrial world was taking shape. Like the arcades themselves, Benjamin's masterwork is a vast montage in which he quotes and reflects on hundreds of topics."; Large 8vo; 1072 pp.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible First Edition
First edition in English. Large 8vo. xiv, 1073, [1] pp., black and white photographic illustrations. Original quarter black cloth with blue pictorial paper covered boards, spine lettered in blue, dust jacket (contents clean and unmarked; minor shelf wear to extremities of jacket, some scuffing and surface wear to rear panel, notwithstanding a really excellent example of this large and unwieldy publication). Cambridge, Massachusetts; Harvard University Press. The first English translation of Walter Benjamin's tragically incomplete yet enduringly influential work of social and cultural theory. Entrusted to his friend Georges Bataille shortly before Benjamin's suicide as the Nazis advanced upon Catalonia, The Arcades Project existed as an enormous, brilliantly disparate array of writings, notes, cuttings and quotations that Benjamin had assembled over the previous decade, largely concerned with city life in nineteenth century France and especially with the iron-and-glass 'arcades' of Hausman's Paris. Seeing in them a 'dialectical image' within which the currents of modern life were embedded, Benjamin organised his work into a series of 36 'convolutes', folders with organisational labels such as 'Fashion', 'Baudelaire', and 'Modes of Lighting'. The present English translation was a landmark: there is almost no other work comparable in the philosophical canon to its sheer scale of semi-organised fragmentation.
