An ex-library hardcover in Very Good condition: has some library markers, but was well cared for and remains in good condition. From Marlboro College Library (VT), which closed in 2020. Ex-library features: faded stamp on the top edge of the textblock, nice bookplate on front pastedown, due date slip on back of back flyleaf, and card receptacle and stap on back pastedown. The bottom corner of the textblock was bumped lightly in 2 spots, causing a few pages to have the tips of their corners curled. There's also a few minor scratches on the fore edge of the textblock. The text is a little tanned around edges, most notably on the endpages. A few pages have some minor smudge marks. Otherwise, the text is clean and unmarked, with a tight binding and firm hinges. Heath: `George Boole's principal work was The Laws of Thought, published in 1854. In 1916 this was reprinted by The Open Court Publishing Company as Volume II of his Logical Works. Volume I was promised, and was to include Boole's miscellaneous writings on logical subjects, together with his papers on related questions of probability. The book which now appears, under the editorship, at my suggestion, of Mr. R. Rhees,is a delayed fulfilment of that promise. Among the notes passed on to me by the late P.E.B. Jourdain there were references to important Boole manuscripts in the Library of the Royal Society. Mr. Rhees has been given access to these. They include material, later than The Laws of Thought and contemporary with his last articles on probability, which shows interesting developments in Boole's views on the nature of logic.There are also earlier writings onthe application of his logical calculus tothe theory of probabil ities. By permission of the Royal Society some of these papers, either in full or in abstract, are included. The Royal Society mss also contained Boole's own interleaved copy of his earlier book The Mathematical Analysis of Logic, with a number of hitherto unpublished notes and revisions.
