Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition, second printing. Blue-grey octavo, deckled edges, 352 pages; 22 cm. The plot centers on Nina Leeds, the daughter of an Ivy League professor, who is devastated when her adored fianc? is killed in World War I, before they have a chance to consummate their passion. Ignoring the uncond…itional love of the novelist Charles Marsden, Nina embarks on a series of sordid affairs before determining to marry an amiable fool, Sam Evans. While Nina is pregnant with Sam's child, she learns a horrifying secret known only to Sam's mother: insanity runs in the Evans family and could be inherited by any child of Sam's. Realizing that a child is essential to her own and to Sam's happiness, Nina decides on a "scientific" solution. She will abort Sam's child and conceive a child with the physician Ned Darrell, letting Sam believe that it is his. The plan backfires when Nina and Ned's intimacy leads to their falling passionately in love. Twenty years later, Sam's "son" Gordon Evans is approaching manhood, with only Nina and Ned aware of the boy's true parentage. The meaning of the title is suggested by the aging Nina in a speech near the end of the play: "Our lives are strange dark interludes in the electrical display of God the Father!"--Wikipedia. Adultery -- Drama. No DJ, as issued. Very mild rubbing to spine head and foot, very gently bumped corners, very light soiling to boards and spine, sunned spine, clean pages, tight binding, about Very Good.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Horace Liveright, Inc., New York, New York, U.S.A., "Tenth printing, September, 1929" of the First (1st) edition, the first printing of which was in February, 1928. Near Fine condition. No Dust Jacket. The Text Block is white, tight, straight, but slightly canted, with gre…en topstain, deckled fore-edges and no markings of any kind. The Binding is full green cloth with white perimeter design and author's signature embossed in gilt to front board, faded gilt title, etc., to spine, corners square but showing wear, and unmarked pictorial endpapers (rear free endpaper is a cancel leaf). No Dust Jacket. 352 pages. 5 1/2" x 8 1/4". An experimental play in nine acts, dealing with a woman's sexual affairs, deception re paternity, abortion and mental illness, the play makes copious use of the soliloquy technique to reveal the thoughts and emotions of the characters expressed in stream of consciousness. Because of its themes, it was often banned in various cities and states. It runs five (5) hours, if uncut. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the basis for the 1932 film of the same name, which starred Norma Shearer and Clark Gable.
