Payne [& 4 others in London], 1797. Provenance: This copy of Eden's pioneering work of social investigation was owned by J. Paul Getty (1892-1976). Each volume contains the library stamps of Sutton Place from the time when it was owned by J. Paul Getty, at the time the world's wealthiest private individual. The library stamps read: "Getty Oil (Britain) Ltd., | Sutton Place, | Guildford, | Surrey." Following Getty's death, the Getty Oil Corporation sold Sutton Place to Stanley J. Seeger (1930-2011), who assembled a wonderful art and book collection during his lifetime. It seems likely that Seeger enjoyed the irony of a study of poverty from the library of the world's richest man. Each volume also contains the armorial bookplate of Edward Southwell Trafford (1838-1912), a landowner and judge. Some wear to the binding, very occasional light spotting and browning; a near fine example.
