Hard Cover. First Edition. (London: Methuen Children's Books 1993). First UK Edition. A children's annual (not issued with a dustwrapper). A faint bruise (I hesitate to call it a bump) to the top right-hand corner of the front board otherwise a bright and clean near fine copy with absolutely NO FADING OR RUBBING to the boards. Inside the text is clean and there are no inscriptions inside. Being hyper-critical there are several short, closed tears to the bottom edge of a few pages (likely caused by a child not being vigilant when reading this copy). These short tears have been neatly and skilfully repaired by Filmoplast acid-free repair tape. This is the first edition of Julia Donaldson's very first book and quite scarce. NB: Donaldson's first book and not to be confused with the later reissue in dustwrapper by Macmillan. Superb illustrations by Axel Scheffler. This copy looks much nicer than it sounds. Photographs/scans available upon request.

A bump to the top right-hand corner of the front board and to the top left-hand corner of the back board, a hint of spine fade, very minor surface loss to the top right and bottom left-hand corner of the front board and a tiny tear/abrasion to the bottom left-hand corner of the front free end-paper (likely a production flaw) otherwise a near fine copy which appears to have been little read. First edition. This was the first collaboration between Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The book appeared six years before The Gruffalo and is comparatively rare in commerce. During the 1970s Julia Donaldson contributed material to BBC Children's Television as a songwriter. The programme Play School broadcast her story "A Squash and a Squeeze" on 6 January 1978, and a BBC Record (Play On - Songs from Play School), from the same year, included the story sung by Derek Griffiths and Floella Benjamin. However, it took over 13 years for a children's publisher to approach Donaldson and propose publication of the story as a picture book. Methuen Children's Books commissioned illustrations from Axel Scheffler. The book was the artist's second picture book. Quarto. Illustrated throughout by Axel Scheffler. Original pictorial boards, spine and covers lettered in black, illustrated endpapers. Issued without dust jacket. Spine slightly sunned, ends just bumped, nick to bottom margin of final page; a very good copy.

A first edition, first printing of 'A Squash and A Squeeze' by Donaldson and Scheffler published by Methuen in 1993. A very good book with some fading to the spine and rubbing to the corners and spine tips - no inscriptions. A lovely copy *A Squash and a Squeeze* by Julia Donaldson is a charming rhyming picture book about a little old lady who complains that her house is too small. A wise old man advises her to bring in various animalsa hen, goat, pig, and cowmaking the space feel even more cramped. When she finally removes them, she realises her home is bigger than she thought. Illustrated by Axel Scheffler, the book delivers a fun, engaging message about gratitude and perspective. With its rhythmic storytelling and playful humour, it's a delightful read for young children and a classic in Donaldson's collection.
