Pages are very clean and intact overall except for light age toning, slight chipping along spine, and moderate foxing. A Very Good copy. A speech originally delivered…before the United States House of Representatives on January 24, 1848 by James Dixon (1793-1871), an American lawyer and politician. He served as a U.S. Representative from Connecticut from 1845-1849 and as a U.S. Senator from Connecticut from 1857-1869. Dixon was elected the U.S. House of Representatives as a Whig and later as a Republican to the U.S. Senate. In much of this speech, Dixon makes counterarguments against a recent message by President James K. Polk in which the former defended his actions in relation to the Mexican-American War. Dixon argues that the war was started by Polk and the U.S., not Mexico, when U.S. forces, as led by Zachary Taylor, were directed to march toward the Rio Grande. Dixon also relays past correspondence by Polk in which he acted contrary to his own orders to John Slidell, who had been tasked by Polk to negotiate, with Mexico, an agreement that would establish the Rio Grande as Texas's southern border. Apparently, Polk had ordered Slidell to withdraw should negotiations fail, but Polk went ahead and sent troops from Corpus Christi to the Rio Grande before hearing from Slidell. Dixon also references past correspondence by other politicians in which they state that Texas was still owned by Mexico and not a sovereign territory.
