This copy is a true 1st American edition, 1st printing of the work published by The Vikiing Press in 1964. The dustjacket is protected from further wear by a Mylar sleeve. ****************************************** "The magnificent second novel from the legendary author of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' ***** Following the astonishing success of his first novel, 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest', Ken Kesey wrote what Charles Bowden calls 'one of the few essential books written by an American in the last half century.' This wild-spirited tale tells of a bitter strike that rages through a small lumber town along the Oregon coast. Bucking that strike out of sheer cussedness are the Stampers. Out of the Stamper family's rivalries and betrayals Ken Kesey has crafted a novel with the mythic impact of Greek tragedy." //////////////////////////////////////////////////// Ken Elton Kesey (September 17, 1935 November 10, 2001) was an American novelist, essayist and countercultural figure. He considered himself a link between the Beat Generation of the 1950s and the hippies of the 1960s. ///// Kesey was born in La Junta, Colorado, and grew up in Springfield, Oregon, graduating from the University of Oregon in 1957. He began writing One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1960 after completing a graduate fellowship in creative writing at Stanford University; the novel was an immediate commercial and critical success when published two years later. . . . ///// Kesey's second novel, Sometimes a Great Notion, was a commercial success that polarized some critics and readers upon its release in 1964. An epic account of the vicissitudes of an Oregon logging family that aspired to the modernist grandeur of William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha saga, Kesey regarded it as his magnum opus. . . . ///// When the 1964 publication of his second novel, Sometimes a Great Notion, required his presence in New York, Kesey, Neal Cassady, and others in a group of friends they called the Merry Pranksters took a cross-country trip in a school bus nicknamed Furthur. This trip, described in Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (and later in Kesey's unproduced screenplay, The Furthur Inquiry), was the group's attempt to create art out of everyday life and to experience roadway America while high on LSD. . . . ///// Between 1974 and 1980, Kesey published six issues of Spit in the Ocean, a literary magazine that featured excerpts from an unfinished novel (Seven Prayers by Grandma Whittier, an account of Kesey's grandmother's struggle with Alzheimer's disease) and contributions from writers including Margo St. James, Kate Millett, Stewart Brand, Saul-Paul Sirag, Jack Sarfatti, Paul Krassner and William S. Burroughs. . . . ********** The above text derives from, respectively, Penguin Publishing Group (via Google Books) and Wikipedia.

Cloth Bound. First Edition. Viking colophon on half title page preceding title page. Hank Krangler identified as photographer on rear jacket flap. Jacket price $7.50 The book is vg+, tight, clean, with slight bumping to lower corners. The dust jacket is good+ to very good- with the following defects: triangular clip out of front flap below the price, minor small chips along top edge, some edge tears up to 1" long, minor paper loss with tiny chipping along lower edge, some small nicks in jacket along creases, and some rubbing and some dirt specks. This would be a most serviceable first edtion for the budget minded. Clearly it is not a prime copy, but neither is it a copy with hideous defects. A middle of the road copy if ever there were one. Book.

First edition. Inscribed first printing of the great Pacific Northwestern novel, a multigenerational logging epic that did for Oregon what Faulkner did to Mississippi. Though often eclipsed by ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, its louder, flashier, more famous older brother, SOMETIMES A GREAT NOTION was, in Kesey's own opinion, his masterpiece. "It's my best work," he told THE PARIS REVIEW, "and I'll never write anything that good again." The novel was selected by the SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER as the most essential of its 12 Essential Northwest Books, and Oregonian writer Robin Cody called it "the best big book we have. [.] No Northwest writer before or since has come within an ax-throw of Kesey's massive novel, which strikes to the very soul of what it means to live here." 8.5'' x 5.5''. Original speckled grey cloth, stamped in blue and green. Green topstain. In original unclipped ($7.50) green and black dust jacket designed by Paul Bacon. 628 pages. Inscribed by Kesey on half-title page with elaborate multicolor stamping and marker drawing. Scuff mark and previous owner's stamp to front free endpaper. Light edgewear to jacket, with two small chips to front panel. Minor bumping to boards. Near fine in very good plus jacket.

Signed and inscribed by Kesey in purple and orange marker on front free endpaper. Publisher's blue-gray cloth, with author's initial to front board, stamped in blue and green; in its original black dust jacket designed by Paul Bacon, lettered in blue, green, and white, with photo of Kesey to rear panel. Near fine, with very light toning to spine, a small spot of discoloration to top stain, some scratches to bottom edge of text block, some marker from inscription transferred to front pastedown, and a faint bit of marker staining to fore edge of text block; very good unclipped dust jacket, with a chip to head of spine and some other small signs of wear to spine ends, a small chip to bottom edge of rear panel, a small closed tear to bottom edge of front panel, light soiling to rear panel, mild dampstaining to verso of spine (not visible on exterior), and a few nicks to right edge of front flap. Overall, a tight and sturdy copy of this classic piece of American literature, with a strikingly colorful signature. Sometimes a Great Notion is an epic story of betrayal and rivalry, set in the Oregon wilderness. The book follows the Stampers, a logging family that stubbornly continues to cut trees in opposition to unionized workers who are on strike. The book features complex relationship dynamics between members of the family, including ailing patriarch Henry; Henry's tough and strong-minded son, Hank; and Henry's youngest son and Hank's half-brother, Leland, who returns home from attending Yale to seek revenge on Hank. The book's title is taken from Leadbelly's song "Irene Goodnight": "Sometimes I live in the country / Sometimes I live in the town / Sometimes I get a great notion / To jump in the river and drown." While less well-known than Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Sometimes a Great Notion has been hailed by some critics as Kesey's greatest novel. In 1971, The book was adapted into a film directed by and starring Paul Newman, and additionally starring Henry Fonda and Lee Remick. Paul Bacon is a prolific American illustrator and dust jacket designer, best known for his "Big Book Look." Notable dust jackets by him include Joseph Heller's Catch-22 (1961), Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five (1969), William Styron's Confessions of Nat Turner (1967), and Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1962). Signed by Author.
