Lion, signed by Lion to front free endpaper. On the acknowledgement page, following the title page, it is noted that the three Napoleon Sonnets in this volume were originally written at Mr. Leon M. Lion's request to be spoken as a prologue to a Napoleon play. Inscribed and signed by the author to front free endpaper: 'To Dear Leon with love Humbert. July 8/31'. To the verso of the half title page the author has included a handwritten poem entitled 'Two Obols', inscribed below the poem 'With great love as always. Humbert Wolfe 12/11/34'. This is an original, unpublished poem by Wolfe. The Humbert Wolfe papers held by New York Library contain a typescript of this poem that was sent in a 1944 letter from Lion to Wolfe's daughter, Euphemia Ann Wolfe. Lion and Wolfe were close friends and in Lion's 1948 autobiography, 'The Surprise of My Life', he includes several letters from Wolfe and two other poems that Wolfe wrote for him.
