Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD; 'from circa1891 to circa 1953 same date on verso with no later printings' identifies Houghton Mifflin Company first editions). This was the author's first novel. You can see the covers in the photos. They are pretty clean, one or two light spots on the front and re…ar. There is also toning off the top and bottom edges of the rear, and a thin vertical line of it there as well. The hue of the spine is only slightly darker than the front and rear. There is crinkling at the top and bottom edges of the spine. The cover edges are in very good shape, no rubbing. The corners are also in very good shape, no more than speck-sized rubbing. The book is square and the spine looks pretty straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The interior of the book is in very nice shape. I turned over all the pages. They are exceptionally clean. I didn't find any soiling at all. The inside covers and end papers are also quite clean, two little spots on the front end paper, one little spot on the front inside cover. The pages are also in very solid condition. I didn't find any turned-down corners or placeholder creases. There are a handful of consecutive pages that have a semi-crease, very light, near to their top corner, and you will see one of those very thin lightening strike-shaped short 'creases' just off the top edge on a small number pages, nothing much of anything. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. 'Only a poet and, perhaps, only a young poet could have written this beautiful and distinguished first novel.'-- New York Times. 'This is the story of two poets, one an elderly Belgian woman known to the world as Jean Latour, the other a young Englishman. When Mark Taylor finds his life and art broken up by his love for an older, married woman, he turns for help to the poems of Jean Latour and finds the help he craves in the poet herself. In this early work we see the first flowering of May Sarton's special ability to depict sensitive people who find they must travel new pathways if they are to discover their true selves.' On an early page the author quotes Emily Dickinson from whom I assume she took the title of this book: 'Adventure most unto itself, The soul condemned to be, Attended by a single hound--Its own identity,'.
