First edition, thus, of this bound volume of the first 26 issues in Vol. IV of Gleason's Pictorial illustrated magazine issued originally from 1851-1859. Vol. IV in 1853 was also the first year that the magazine had absorbed the Illustrated News of New York, and would later be changed to Ballou's Pictorial Drawing-Room companion in 1855. This Vol. IV features much of the novel by J.H. Robinson, set against the backdrop of Kentucky woodsman Simon Girty, who had abandoned white society to live with the local Native Americans. Of note are the presence of the often-lacking large folding plates, featuring panoramic illustrations of Commodore Perry's Squadron to Japan, as well as the views of East & West side of Washington Street, offering a Ruscha-style effect in woodcut engraving.
