The story presents a history, for future students, of the planet Shikasta (called Earth by its inhabitants) under the influence of three galactic empires, Canopus, Sirius, and their mutual enemy, Puttiora, presented as a series of reports from emissaries detailing the Century of Destruction and the Apocalypse (i.e. World War III). Mystic Sufi influences are present. The word Shikasta comes from Persian language, meaning "broken".
