[1], [x], 117, [1], 16 pp. Bound in publisher's silver-green watered silk, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut, some leaves unopened. (Spine and corners a little bumped and worn). Internally very clean with B. H. Blackwell's booksellers ticket to front pastedown and a neat ink inscription to front fly leaf. With 16pp 'List of Books in Belles Lettres' at the rear. Containing twelve conversations and two short stories originally printed in the Pall Mall Gazette in 1893 and 1894. A very good copy of the second edition of Well's first non-scientific work.

This copy bears the 1895 copyright date, and Merriam Co. on the copyright page, but Saalfield, 1900 on the title page Octavo, pictorial cloth covers, top edge gilt. 195 pages + 9 pages of publisher's ads. This edition has the original engraved title page art, (signed with the initials F.H.T) but with the new publisher and date substituted. Cover has a little rubbing, else in very nice condition. No dust jacket. Studio.

Gilt lettered light green cloth covered boards. Second edition. Well's first fictional book. Part III of the Mayfair set. 117 pages, this variant without ads. Originally published in The Pall Mall Gazette in 1893-94. "To my dearest and best friend, R.A.C.," which is a jumbled anagram, dedicated to either R.A. Gregory, Wells's friend who later became the editor of NATURE between 1919 and 1939, or for Wells's wife, Amy Catherine Robbins. Found inside this edition is a 6 page advertising pamphlet promoting ERNEST THOMPSON SETON's illustrated books who was also a contributor of NATURE magazine. A fine example & very uncommon, published the day before The Time Machine. Previous owner signature.
