Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an extensive analysis of the nature of kingship in the Carolingian era. From the 9th century, four texts emerged which attempted to define the duties and responsibilities of a Christian king and their relationship with the Church. The author examines these fascinating texts to unearth their insights into the complex relationship between secular and religious power during the early Middle Ages. The author demonstrates the originality of the authors of these texts while situating their writings within their wider historical context. The book delves into wider concepts such as divine right, the influence of the Church in secular affairs, and the ideal qualities of a Christian ruler. It concludes by highlighting the profound influence of these texts on subsequent ideas about the nature of monarchy, both throughout the Middle Ages and beyond. This book comprehensively examines the nature and duties of kingship as elaborated in four key texts from the ninth century: Smaragd of Saint-Mihiel's Via Regia, Jonas of Orleans' De institutione regia, Hinkmar of Reims' De regis persona et regio ministerio, and Sedulius Scottus' Liber de rectoribus Christianis. Produced in close association with the Carolingian courts, these works sought to define the responsibilities of rulers and the relationship between church and state. The author charts the historical development of these ideas, placing them within the broader context of early medieval political thought. The book delves into the expectations and ideals of rulership during this period, shedding light on the intellectual and religious currents that shaped conceptions of political authority in the Carolingian era.
