R…eynolds worked hard to expose Victorian poverty and criminality in his writings, some of which predate Mayhew's popular accounts. Not all of his works appeared as Penny Dreadfuls, he is known as an author of this genre due to the serialisation of the majority of his novels.Former owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, Mr J Maldren Fleet.Illustrated, with many full page illustrations throughout.Penny Dreadfuls were a popular serialized form of literature produced during the nineteenth century. The works were typically published weekly in parts of 8 to sixteen pages at the cost of a penny. The genre was sensationalised crime fiction, or supernatural fiction.
