In those years the citizens of the United States were ready to drink anything-and to do or pay anything to get a drink. Easy money was there, but the suppliers ran terrible risks to make it. Not only were the seas rough and the cargoes heavy, but many a rum-runner's crew was befogged by booze, and the contraband itself was a constant temptation to this undisciplined lot.
