According to a Wikipedia entry abou…t him, "Robert Joseph Flaherty . . . (February 16, 1884 ? July 23, 1951) was an American filmmaker who directed and produced the first commercially successful feature-length documentary film, Nanook of the North (1922). The film made his reputation and nothing in his later life fully equaled its success, although he continued the development of this new genre of narrative documentary with Moana (1926), set in the South Seas, and Man of Aran (1934), filmed in Ireland's Aran Islands. Flaherty is considered the "father" of both the documentary and the ethnographic film."Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fine. Near Fine dj. First Edition. [nice clean flawless book; ditto the jacket, but for a tiny dent/wrinkle at the bottom left corner of the front panel]. (B&W photographs) "This captivating new study presents a totally new perspective on Flaherty, through the eyes of someone who knew him personally -- the…brilliant British filmmaker and scholar Paul Rotha. A colleague and close friend of Flaherty, Rotha gives us a powerfully written biography that is a balanced and intimate look at the life and work of an American genius. Editor Jay Ruby has restored the Rotha biography, including a wealth of anecdotes, letters, and memoirs that begin to bring Robert Flaherty the man info focus. An especially value dimension of this work is the appraisal of Flaherty the filmmaker from the viewpoint of a major figure of the British industry." (That "restored" comment needs a little explanation: as extensively detailed in his introduction, the editor was working from two different manuscripts -- one edited, the other unedited -- of Rotha's book, which was completed in 1959 but never published, although it was extensively used as source material for Alexander Calder-Marshall's 1963 biography of Flaherty, "The Innocent Eye." Rotha himself died the year after this book appeared, but according to the introduction he was not directly involved in its preparation.).
