The Postmaster Generalship was his reward. "He was charged with favoritism in making contracts for carrying the mails, with increasing payments to contractors far beyond the publishe…d schedules, with sweeping dismissals from office, with illegally borrowing money, and with general looseness in his bookkeeping" [DAB].
