1 vol. 4to (253 x 195 mm) of : XIV (title, epistle, warning, "explication de quelques termes de marine"); 298 pp. (including table); [1] f. (approbation, privilege, errors to be corrected); 37 numbered plates (scattered light foxing). Half sheep, boards covered with marbled paper, five-ribbed spine decorated, red morocco title, red edges (attractive pastiche binding, original book block). First edition of this classic of South Sea travel literature. Initially prized for its cartographic contribution (Frézier was the author of the first reliable map of the eastern shore of the Pacific), it continues to interest readers today for its natural history, ethnological and social observations. Frézier (1682-1737), infantry lieutenant, was appointed ingénieur ordinaire in 1707, and distinguished himself by suggesting to Marshal Villars the "Denain maneuver" that ended the War of the Spanish Succession. Appointed an engineering officer, he was chosen by the Minister of Fortifications, Peletier de Souzy, for a voyage of exploration in the South Seas: a reconnaissance mission of Spanish ports and fortifications on the west coast of South America. France, in the midst of an economic crisis, sought information on the King of Spain's rich colonies: their ports, trade relations and mineral resources. After a first abortive departure, Frézier embarked as a private individual on a merchant ship, the Saint-Joseph, commanded by Captain Duchesne-Battas, of 350 tons, 150 men and 36 cannons (mission confidentiality required) in January 1712. They reached Concepción in June 1712. At the end of September, Frézier sailed for eight months to Valparaiso, from where he visited Santiago. In May 1713, he headed north again, visiting Serena, the Copiapo coast and as far as Callao, the port of Lima. He returned to Concepción, where he stayed from November 1713 to February 1714, before setting sail for France on a merchant ship that arrived in Marseille in August 1714. His Relation brought major advances in cartography to a dangerous and little-known part of the world, which was vital for communications and trade at the time: the Magellan Strait, Cape Horn, the Isle of the States, Tierra del Fuego and the Falklands. Bougainville and La Pérouse cited it as a reference in their relations when passing through these areas. The book gives a precise account of all the fortifications, batteries and troops in these ports. But the author is also a botanist, a mineralogist (in his analysis of the gold and silver mines), and even an economist and ethnologist. With an acerbic pen, he depicts the colonists as lazy.

First Edition
First Edition. A defective first edition (missing one map and one plate) of this classic in the literature of Pacific voyages of exploration. 4to: xiv,298,[2]pp, with 35 (of 37) maps, plans, and plates (18 of which are folding); ornamental engraved vignettes, and woodcut musical notation in the text (never bound in were the map of Détroit de le Maire, no. v, and the plate of Indiens en habits simples, no. ix); plate xvi was bound in twice). Contemporary calf, spine richly gilt in six compartments, brown leather lettering piece gilt, "Caissotti" in gilt script on upper board, all edges stained red, marbled end papers, red silk page marker. An exceptional, wide-margined copy, text, maps, and plates fresh and clean, marred only by a stain in the gutter of first three leaves. Provenance: copper-engraved bookplate, "Il Cittadino / Carlo Giac. Caissotti." Sabin 25924. Borba de Moraes 328. Hill, p. 115. Leclerc 1736. Palau 94964. Gibson's Library, p. 128. Item #BB0841. Frézier set sail in 1712 with a French commission to assess the strength of Spanish settlements on the Pacific coast and to revise existing charts. According to Hill, he "brought back information of considerable geographical and scientific value" to later navigators, and his account is today appreciated for its keen observations of the customs, commerce, and natural historyâ"including the cotton and strawberry plantsâ"of Chile, Peru and Tierra del Fuego. (It's interesting to note that Frezier's surname was itself derived from fraise, the French for strawberry.) The chapters on Indian and Creole life include descriptions of costume and architecture, as well as musical instruments. The folding plans of cities visited are often enhanced by panoramic views, as in the case of Callao, Concepción, Valparaíso, La Serena, Salvador de Bahía, and Angra (Azores). Amongst the most important plates are the general map of the expedition, the Strait of Lemaire, Valdivia, Bahía de an Vicente, Santiago de Chile, Lima and Bahía de Todos los Santos. An immediate success, the work was soon translated into English and German and republished several times in the eighteenth century. N. B. First Edition in Contemporary Calf FREZIER, Amedee Francois. Paris: Chez Jean-Geoffroy Nyon, Etienne Ganeau, Jacque Quillau, 1716. First Editon. Large octavo (9 7/8 x 7 1/2 inches; 252 x 191 mm). xiv, 298, [2] pp. Complete with thirty-seven numbered engraved maps and plates, some of which are folding. Beautifully illustrated with plates depicting everything from strawberries to Indian games. Excellent studies of cities and settlements of the west coast of Spanish America. Full contemporary calf, spine elaborately stamped in gilt. Red morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Edges speckled red. Edges a bit rubbed and corners a bit bumped. Head and tail of the spine slightly chipped. Overall a very good copy. Plate IX, showing a Chilean in the posture of playing La Sueca, is commonly regarded as the earliest depiction of a form of golf. Frezier introduced strawberries from Chile to France. "Frezier, a French royal military engineer, was under contract to sail to the Spanish possessions in South America to construct forts for defense against English and Dutch attacks. The French government also ordered him to chart the western coast of South America, in order that they would have some knowledge of that area for possible military operations. The first part of this book gives an interesting account of the voyage from France around Cape Horn and was used by contemporary and even by later navigators. The second part relates to the voyage along the coasts of Chile and Peru, describing the chief towns and cities. Frezier, a man of observation, brought back information of consideration geographical and scientific value" (Hill). Hill I, pp. 115-6. Sabin 25925. HBS 65403. $5,000.

Guerard le fils and J. B. Scotin; ornamental engraved vignette and historiated initials preceding dedication, some musical notation in the text. Ornamental woodcuts and initials. 19th century half calf; spine gilt with armorial stamp gilt-stamped on tailend of spine. First edition of a classic in the literature on South American voyages of exploration. Frézier (1682-1737), a military engineer from Savoy, sailed to Chile and Peru in 1712 with a French commission to assess the strength of Spanish settlements on the Pacific coast. His account of the expedition was much valued as an early contribution to the hydrographical knowledge of the region, but is today of interest for its keen observations on the life, customs, commerce, and natural history of Chile, Peru, and Brazil. The author was the first Frenchman to accomplish an accurate chart of the Straits of Magellan and of the region round Cape Horn, and his work served as a guide to later navigators. The folding plans of the cities visited are often enhanced by inset panoramic views, as in the case of Callao, Concepción, Valparaíso, La Serena, Salvador de Bahía, and Angra (Azores). The chapters on Indian and creole life include descriptions of costume and architecture, music and dancing (pp232-233), food and drink, and pastimes, with plates showing male and female costume, the ritual of drinking maté (Paraguayan tea), Chilean Indians playing the 'Sueca', a game resembling hockey, flour-making, etc. On pp241-246 the author describes the cruel and mean treatment of the Indians by the creoles, who were not permitted to have Indians as slaves, and therefore favoured their African slaves imported from Angola and Guinea via Portobello and Panama; these in turn were not allowed to mix with the Indians and adopted their masters' condescension towards them. The Indians consequently nurtured an implacable hatred of both the creoles and their slaves, and hid away provisions and any mineral riches they might discover. The section on Brazil treats the island of Santa Catharina (pp17-27), and Bahia, (pp272-279), then the country's capital, where the author comments on the African slave trade and on the large population of Jews; a folding plate represents two negro slaves carrying a passenger in a sedan chair. Frézier's studies of natural history are only remembered today for bringing back Chilean strawberry plants which were successfully propagated in France by Bernard de Jussieu, and here illustrated life-size on plate XI. There are descriptions of the maté tea plant (pp228-230), of the coca plant (pp246-247), of guano (p137), and plates representing the cotton plant, exotic fishes and llamas. Light foxing at beginning and end, otherwise a good copy.

Borda de Moraes I, p. 281. Chadenat n° 71. Leclerc, n° 587.
