Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. William Leak, London, 1647. Hardcover, 235 pp. 1st edition. A treatise on sewers by English barrister Robert Callis, who was also the commissioner of sewers for the county of Lincolnshire. In a quarter leather binding, with marbled paper-covered boards, gold titles on the maroon spine. Age toning of interior, with numerous condensation and water stains, mostly in margins, some puckering and rippling of pages but all are legible. Rubbed and nicked leather. Endpapers appear to be replaced (wove paper). All original text is present, and on laid paper. With marginal notes in pencil throughout and names of at least 3 possible previous owners written on title page, two of which are in ink (one dated 1838 is in pencil). Plus a few old pen scribbles and doodles. There are a few short tears on page edges. Small hole in margin of page 63/64. An unusual, rather primitive watermark appears near gutter on the last text page. More photos available on request.

Add to basketFull calf. Condition: Very Good +. Bound in an elegant, early 20th century full dark-calf, with 5 raised bands and bright-gilt leather title-label along the spine. Offsetting at the new pastedowns and endsheets, the original title page (lacking 15% along its bottom-edge and 5% along its top-edge) has had tasteful, professional repair work to make it whole again. Internally, very impressive, with the original pages (Robert Callis's original text) uniformly bright, clean and crisp. Thanks to re-strengthened headbands, the binding is strong and very solid. An important text in mid 17th century urban engineering, this octavo copy of the 1647 1st edition is well-preserved and very presentable, meriting a VG+.
