8vo (101 x 176 mm). XXIV, 285, (1) pp. With one woodcut initial. Near-contemporary half calf over marbled boards with giltstamped spine and spine-title. All edges marbled. Second edition, rare. A fundamental handbook for missionaries to Indochina, prepared by François Pallu (d. 1684) and Pierre Lambert de la Motte (d. 1679), founding members of the Société des Missions Étrangères de Paris and driving forces behind the establishment in 1665 of the Seminary of St. Joseph, the nucleus of what would become the College General, an interdiocesan seminary still active today (now in Penang, Malaysia). - The first edition was published in 1669 as a sum of Pallu's and Lambert de la Motte's preliminary mission experiences in China, Tonkin, Cochinchina and Siam. The two men saw their text in the tradition of the foundational missionaries Francis Xavier (d. 1552) and José de Acosta (d. 1600). Offering practical and spiritual guidance for seeding the Christian faith in the East, the "Instructiones" advocate a tightly reasoned model of conversion, rejecting previous missionary strategies that either expected natives to accept Christianity without complaint, as if delivered to them by an oracle, or resorted to extra-Christian means - "astrology, math, painting, the mechanical arts" - to seduce converts. - Pallu and Lambert de la Motte were two of 17 missionaries who undertook an overland journey from France to Siam (eight died in transit) during the early 1660s. In 1665 they established their mission in Juthia, Siam (now Ayutthaya, Thailand), a thriving city known as "The Venice of the East" that boasted more than a million inhabitants by the year 1700. - Exceedingly rare, only a single library copy traceable online (at the municipal library of Lyon, France). - Corners slightly rubbed; hinges starting. Occasional light foxing; ink stain to p. VII. Otherwise very well preserved. - Removed from the library of the Marist congregation in Lyon, with their stamps of ownership to title-page. Two old shelfmark labels mounted to flyleaf (one on top of the other). - Cordier, Bibl. Sinica 825. OCLC 417906408.

Propaganda has been an important tool of the Republic of China government since its inception in 1912. It also was an important tool in legitimizing the Kuomintang controlled Republic of China government that retreated from China to Taiwan in 1949. Because the national government of this time was weak, it was difficult for any censorship or propagandistic measures to be carried out effectively. However, a bureau was set up to control the production and release of film in China. Also, newspapers unfavorable to the central government could be harassed at will. Propaganda of this time was directed against the Communists and the Japanese. One tool of the main tools for disseminating propaganda in Taiwan has been the Government Information Office and the various media properties controlled by the Kuomintang and the government. Besides controlling commercial TV and radio stations, there also exists a police radio station that often broadcast 'educational' plays with propagandistic value and a film bureau. 76 pp. Englisch.

Herman and Noam Chomsky that alleges systemic biases in the mass media and seeks to explain them in terms of structural economic causes. First presented in their 1988 book Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media, the 'Propaganda model' views the private media as businesses interested in the sale of a product readers and audiences to other businesses (advertisers) rather than that of quality news to the people. Describing the media's 'societal purpose', Chomsky writes, '. the study of institutions and how they function must be scrupulously ignored, apart from fringe elements or a relatively obscure scholarly literature'. The theory postulates five general classes of 'filters' that determine the type of news that is presented in news media. 108 pp. Englisch.

News propaganda is covert propaganda packaged as credible news without transparency as to source and motivation. The lack of transparency is critical to distinguishing news propaganda from traditional press releases and video news releases. As with any propaganda, news propaganda may be spread for purposes including political or ideological reasons, partisan agenda, religious motivation, and commercial motivation. In wartime, propaganda can be motivated by national security reasons. The UK Foreign Office, which spent Pds. 340m on propaganda activities in the UK alone in 2001, previously funded British Satellite News, a free television news and feature service. Production of British Satellite News ceased in September 2009. The Foreign Office is also the primary funder of the BBC World Service, but as part of the BBC it has complete editorial and managerial independence. 136 pp. Englisch.

Propaganda of the deed (or propaganda by the deed, from the French propagande par le fait) is a concept that promotes physical violence against political enemies as a way of inspiring the masses and catalyzing revolution. Propaganda of the deed may take many forms, but in many cases utilizes violence against people seen as threats to the working class. It also refers to the use of symbolic acts of violence against structural targets, in which the act is intended to evoke a broader meaning. 132 pp. Englisch.

The Spanish-American War (April August 1898) was the first conflict in which military action was precipitated by media involvement. The war grew out of U.S. interest in a fight for revolution between the Spanish military and citizens of their Cuban colony. American newspapers fanned the flames of interest in the war by fabricating atrocities which justified intervention in a number of Spanish colonies worldwide. Several forces within the United States were pushing for a war with Spain. Their tactics were wide-ranging and their goal was to engage the opinion of the American people in any way possible. Men such as William Randolph Hearst, the owner of The New York Journal was involved in a circulation war with Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World and saw the conflict as a way to sell papers. 208 pp. Englisch.

The communist propaganda was extensively based on the Marxism-Leninism ideology to promote the Communist Party line. In societies with pervasive censorship, the propaganda was omnipresent and very efficient. It penetrated even social and natural sciences giving rise to various pseudo-scientific theories like Lysenkoism, whereas fields of real knowledge, as genetics, cybernetics, and comparative linguistics were condemned and forbidden as 'bourgeois pseudoscience'. With 'truths repressed, falsehoods in every field were incessantly rubbed in in print, at endless meetings, in school, in mass demonstrations, on the radio'. Englisch.

Proletcult Theatre was the theatrical branch of the Soviet cultural movement Proletcult. It was concerned with the powerful expression of ideological content as political propaganda in the years following the revolution of 1917. Platon Kerzhentsev was one of its principal practitioners. It was used as a tool of political agitation that promoted a culture of the factory-floor and industrial motifs, but also folk singing and avant-garde. Plot was unimportant; its goal was to shock the audience with its style of performance, lighting techniques, props, radio broadcasts, blown-up newspaper headlines and slogans, projected films, circus elements, etc. The Proletcult Theatre attempted to affect the audience psychologically and emotionally, producing a shock in the spectator, the effect of which is to make the viewer aware of the condition of their own lives. This style is often referred to as the theatre of attractions, where an attraction is any aggressive emotional shock that provides the opportunity to raise awareness of the ideological reality of life (to defamiliarize the familiar ), particularly the mundane material reality.

Tokio Jokio is a 1943 Looney Tunes short directed by Norman McCabe (Cpl. was added after the film finished production, as McCabe was drafted into the Armed Forces before its release). It is a propaganda film made during World War II mocking Japan in the style of a supposed Japanese film journal broadcast. Behind him the rising sun of the Japanese Rising Sun Flag appears. The voiceover says: 'Ohh, cock-a-doodle-doo, prease!', in a further emphasis that this vulture is Japanese.
