Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Prometheus Bound is an Ancient Greek tragedy. In antiquity, it was attributed to Aeschylus, but now is considered by some scholars to be the work of another hand, and perhaps one as late as c. 430 BC. Despite these doubts of authorship, the play's designation as Aeschylean has remained conventional. The tragedy is based on the myth of Prometheus, a Titan who defies the gods and gives fire to mankind, acts for which he is subjected to perpetual punishment. Paperback. Condition: New. Though it tells the stories of the defeated, Prometheus Bound and Other Plays features four tragedies that depict both unfortunate demises and the essence of the fighting human spirit. The Suppliants, the first play of the collection, follows the daughters of Danaus as they flee from the loveless marriages that had been forced upon them. The Persians, perhaps the oldest surviving play in existence, portrays the defeat of the Persian King Xeroxes. Though written by a Greek man who fought in the Persian war, The Persians displays a surprisingly sympathetic view of the opposing army. Next in the collection is Seven Against Thebes, which follows the battle between two brothers for the throne of Thebes. After the banishment of Oedipus, Eteocles and Adrastus, the two brothers, engaged in an epic war, fulfilling the tragic curse of the Oedipus family. The title tragedy in Prometheus Bound and Other Plays, Prometheus Bound, tells the tale of the downfall of the titian Prometheus. Before Prometheus, mankind had no advantage over the gods that ruled the heavens and Earth. Humans were forced to cower in the cold darkness, plagued by ignorance until Prometheus took pity on them. With heroic intentions, Prometheus stole fire and knowledge from Olympus and gave it to mankind. Though he brought light, warmth, and understanding to Earth, Zeus was outraged, and so began Prometheus' punishment. Featuring the oldest surviving play, legendary myths, epic battles, and humanist perspectives, Prometheus Bound and Other Plays by Aeschylus is a classic tragedy that exemplifies empathy and the human spirit even in its tales of defeat. Written by the father of tragedy, this collection is a privileged possession. This edition of Prometheus Bound and Other Plays by Aeschylus is now easier than ever to enjoy with a modern, readable font and a stunning new cover design. Witness a surprising triumph of spirit even in the face of failure with Prometheus Bound and Other Plays.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Aeschylus was an ancient Greek tragedian. In addition to Sophocles and Euripides, Aeschylus is the first whose ancient & classical plays still survive. Aeschylus is often described as the father of tragedy and many critics and scholars' knowledge of Greek, ancient & medieval literature, and dramas & plays begins with his work, and understanding of earlier tragedies is largely based on inferences from Aeschylus surviving plays. Among his surving plays is Prometheus Bound. The tragedy Prometheus Bound is based on the myth of Prometheus, a Titan who defies the gods and gives fire to mankind, acts for which he is subjected to perpetual punishment. The drama & play is composed almost entirely of speeches and contains little action since its protagonist is chained and immobile throughout. Prometheus Bound is often required textbook reading in the following disciplines; English, literature & fiction, Ancient & Medieval Literature, Greek, ancient & classical, dramas & plays, tragedy, world literature, and history. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus and translated into English Verse by E.D.A. Morshead. From the plays of Aeschylus. The surviving dramas of Aeschylus are seven in number, though he is believed to have written nearly a hundred during his life of sixty-nine years, from 525 B.C. to 456 B.C. That he fought at Marathon in 490, and at Salamis in 480 B.C. is a strongly accredited tradition, rendered almost certain by the vivid references to both battles in his play of The Persians, which was produced in 472. The Prometheus Bound is conspicuous for its gigantic and strictly superhuman plot. The Agamemnon is human, though legendary the Prometheus presents to us the gods of Olympus in the days when mankind crept like emmets upon the earth or dwelt in caves, scorned by Zeus and the other powers of heaven, and-still aided by Prometheus the Titan-wholly without art or science, letters or handicrafts. For his benevolence towards oppressed mankind, Prometheus is condemned by Zeus to uncounted ages of pain and torment, shackled and impaled in a lonely cleft of a Scythian precipice. The play opens with this act of divine resentment enforced by the will of Zeus and by the handicraft of Hephaestus, who is aided by two demons, impersonating Strength and Violence. These agents if the ire of Zeus disappear after the first scene, the rest of the play represents Prometheus in the mighty solitude, but visited after a while by a Chorus of sea nymphs who, from the distant depths of ocean, have heard the clang of the demons' hammers, and arrive, in a winged car, from the submarine palace of their father Oceanus. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.
