Stephen Beale is the pseudonym of Sir Edward Brown, first president of the World Poultry Science Association and an enthusiastic expert who roused poultry breeders to win recognition for themselves in the nation's life. A prolific writer, he edited many poultry publications and was knighted in 1931 in recognition of his work for industry. He died in 1939. The illustrator Thomas William Wood (1833 - 14 February 1882 was an English zoological illustrator responsible for the accurate drawings in major nineteenth-century works of natural history including Darwin's The Descent of Man and Wallace's The Malay Archipelago.
