A Very Good copy. A work of drama criticism presented as a collection of essays. Authored by Clayton Hamilton (1881-1946), an American drama critic and editor. In this volume, Hamilton addresses a number of subjects relating to theater or drama criticism. He notes that one significant aspect concerning criticism of modern American drama (in his time) is that it is still a nascent field of study with few commentators. The following are the titles of the essays herein: "Contrast in the Drama," "Building a Play Backward," "The Point of View," "Surprise in the Drama," "The Troublesome Last Act," "Strategy and Tactics," "Proportion in the Drama," "Harmony in Presentation," "High Comedy in America," "The George M. Cohan School of Playwrights," "Youth and Age in Drama," "Yvette Guilbert--Premiere Diseuse," "The Loveliness of Little Things," "The Magic of Mr. Chesterton," "Middle Class Opinion," "Criticism and Creation in the Drama," "A Kiss for Cinderella," "Dramatic Talent and Theatrical Talent," "Stevenson on the Stage," "The Plays of Lord Dunsany," "The Mood of Maeterlinck," "Euripides in New York," "Romance and Realism in the Drama," "Scenic Settings in America," "The New Stagecraft," "The Long Run in the Theatre," "The Non-commercial Drama," "The Public and the Theatre," "A Democratic Insurrection in the Theatre," "Literature and the Drama," "A Scheme for a Stock Company," and "What Is Wrong with the American Drama?".

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the complex world of playwriting, offering a unique perspective on the art of crafting compelling and successful theatrical works. The author examines the fundamental principles of drama, exploring the shift away from traditional formulas and delving into the possibilities of new techniques. The book probes the evolution of dramatic structures, contrasting the linear narrative of the "well-made play" with the more intricate and analytical techniques employed by later playwrights like Henrik Ibsen. The author argues that the playwright has the freedom to manipulate time and perspective, offering the audience a unique and engaging experience. Through a detailed analysis of various plays, the book illustrates how the playwright can use surprising twists, unconventional storytelling methods, and varied points of view to capture the audience's attention and enhance the dramatic impact of the play. This book offers valuable insights into the innovative approaches to playwriting emerging in a rapidly changing theatrical landscape, encouraging readers to appreciate the technical and artistic complexities of the drama. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
