Add to basketFirst edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Professor Alonzo Church with cordial regards, Ernest Nagel". Church (1903-1995) taught philosophy and mathematics at Princeton from 1920 to 1967, where he made major contributions to mathematical logic and theoretical computer science. He worked closely with Nagel, professor at Columbia University, and the pair edited The Journal of Symbolic Logic from 1940 to 1945. In his Principles, "Nagel defended the frequency interpretation of probability. He made, however, a sustained effort to survey the various alternatives and to deal with many of the problems that have been raised about the frequency interpretation. He was perhaps the first American philosopher to call serious attention to the important method of arbitrary functions in probability theory that began with Poincaré and was extended by Eberhard Hopf, George D. Birkhoff and others. This approach, based on relatively straightforward principles of physical symmetry, as in the case of roulette or coin-flipping, provided a detailed account of observed probabilistic phenomena as recorded in relative frequencies" (ANB). Octavo. Original blue wrappers, front cover lettered in black. Inscription "Nagel" to spine. Wrappers worn, front cover splitting at head, spine a little sunned. A good copy.

Add to basketFirst edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to the philosopher Alfred North Whitehead on the front free endpaper: "To Professor A. N. Whitehead with the esteem of Ernest Nagel". The American philosopher Ernest Nagel (1901-1985), a major contributor to the field of logical positivism, contributed reviews of Whitehead's works in philosophical journals, and wrote his obituary in The Nation (14 February 1948). Nagel's Principles on the Theory of Probability was printed in the series International Encyclopedia of Unified Science, as the sixth number of vol. I. The Encyclopedia was an ambitious project by the Vienna Circle, of which Nagel was a part, to provide a journal unifying the various branches of philosophy and science. The English philosopher Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947) was a seminal figure in process philosophy, and together with Bertrand Russell, wrote Principia Mathematica (1910-13), widely credited as among the most important philosophical works of the 20th century. Octavo. Original blue wrappers, front cover lettered in black. Light toning to extremities, wear at spine ends, short tear at head of spine. A very good copy.
