Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the profound changes that occurred in Old Testament studies over the last twenty years. The author highlights the shift from analyzing books into documents or sources to investigating the historicity of earlier books and the understanding of historical and devotional material in the light of growing knowledge of the ancient oriental environment. The author notes that scholars have been greatly aided by archaeological research, which has provided abundant material for reconstructing knowledge of ancient oriental life. The book examines the progress made in various branches of Old Testament study, including the work of Graf, Kuenen, and Wellhausen on Pentateuchal analysis; the discovery of the Kenite document by Julian Morgenstern; and the renewed historical research on the Decalogue. The book also discusses the debate on the date and function of Deuteronomy, the historical value of Pentateuchal narratives, and the understanding of the Book of Isaiah and the Book of Ezekiel. The book concludes by emphasizing the progress made in understanding the Psalter, the Wisdom Books, and the Hebrew language, and by highlighting the importance of these insights for appreciating the Old Testament's significance and message.
