A Good, brown cloth binding with gilt lettering on front board, binding intact, moderate handling/scuff marks and soiled spots to boards and spine, abrasions to board corners, frayed spine edges with some loss to both edges, rubbing to board edges, dent top front and rear board edge, age toning to pages, some foxing to pastedowns/endpapers, bit of biblichor, front free endpaper appears to be torn out and missing, map attached in rear is Very Good and intact, one tear to page (refer to picture in this listing), text block edges a bit pulpy, without Dust wrapper. Hardcover. Early edition. 96pp. Quarto [30 cm] Green cloth covered boards with a gilt stamped title on the front cover. Fair. The covers are very subtly concave. The edges of the covers are rubbed and gently bumped. The head of the spine has the remains of a small label. The cloth at the spine ends is frayed. The text block is coming away from the covers. It is hanging on to the front cover by two of the chords. The front pastedown is slightly abraded. Pages mildly browned. The bottom right corners and some of the fore edges of the pages are moisture stained. With the map at the rear. Among the numerous districts discussed are Battle Mountain District, Palmetto District, Blind Spring District, and Clarke District.

Wheeler, a veteran explorer and cartographer of the Nevada Territory, was sent back there in 1871 to explore the area extending into Arizona. The large map shows an unusually large portion of the West, including the portion of Nevada south of Battle Mountain and Elko, parts of California including Death Valley, and reaching to San Bernadino and the Sierra Nevada, with a cross-section of Arizona. Original brown cloth, gilt (extremities worn with minor loss). First official exploration of this area, including southern Nevada, the Mojave Desert and Death Valley. Includes much on the mining districts of Nevada and eastern California. "Wheeler conducted the first official explorations of southern Nevada's interior area. His corps of engineers contributed to the report concerning the climate, geology, wildlife, the Indians and white settlement of southern Nevada in 1871. The map contains dozens of place names and is in itself a significant record. A valuable report." (Paher).
