The book features 10 full-page engraved plates by "PHIZ" (the pseudonym of H.K. Browne, who illustrated seven of Charles Dickens's novels) - all plates are present. Decorative gilt spine with embossed decorations on the covers. Hook was an English author and composer, known for his satirical and humorous works. Half-Leather. Condition: Good. Second Edition. Early edition of this book published in Paris in 1840. I believe the first edition was published by Henry Colburn in three volumes earlier in the same year, 1840. Contemporary half-leather binding with marbled boards. The spine has no title panel and there is some chipping at the top and a half inch piece missing from the surface at the right edge and across onto the front panel. Four raised gilt bands on the spine. The boards have some surface rubbing and some rubbing and fraying to the corners. The marbled page edges are a little darkened. Bookplate to the front pastedown and another smaller and later plate to the reverse of the front free endpaper. There is spotting to the pages throughout the book though it is generally not particulary heavy and there are a few stains here and there but the pages are otherwise generally unmarked.
