This book is a manual for English-speaking students wishing to learn practical moder Arabic - the Arabic commonly referred to as 'newspaper' Arabic: this is neither the colloquial nor the classical language, but the Arabic used in spokent or written form by those who are literature throughout the Arabic-speaking world. As well as being sufficient in itself for those needing a working knowledge of the language, this book will also be a suitable beginning for those who later want to acquire a scholar's knowledge of classical Arabic. The aim of the book is to teach all grammar and syntax necessary for the correct writing and speaking of simple modern Arabic. Grammatical and syntactical points are explained more fully than is usual, and there are many examples and exercises. The Arabic script is taught by a new method whereby the student is taught from the beginning to read the sound direct from the Arabic script without the need of mental transileration. The book falls into four parts. The first introduces the sounds peculiar to the Arabic language, and the Arabic script. The second part familiarizes the student with the fact thaqt the language is built from consonantal, not syllabic roots. Grammar and syntax are taught in the third part, and the fourth section concentrates on enlarging the vocabulary and extending practice in all the structures and forms taught.
