Hardcover in original titled cloth, xvi + 224pp. Originally printed in 1929 by the Whitefriars Press in Tonbridge, this 1932 re-issue retains its lavish production, profusely illustrated with in-text engravings, diagrams, and full-colour plates, some tipped-in. An exhaustive survey of poster design, starting with Assyrian wall panels and archaeological examples, covering the principles of proportion, perspective, scale, ?symmetry, visual rhythms, the use of colour, typefaces, all in relation to modern (inter-war) graphic design and advertisement art, with many examples tinged with Art Nouveau and Art Deco influence. Spine slightly sunned, previous owner's name inked on front endpaper, otherwise very good condition.

With sections covering all aspects of the poster: origin and development, analysis of the modern poster, composition, designer's materials, poster production and display and posters as works of art. Many of the tip-ins reproduce posters from throughout Europe covering a wide variety of events, products and services, and their colors remain vibrant. Very mild age-toning around the edges of the covers, with only a touch of finger-soiling; spine lightly soiled and very lightly faded. Overall, a wonderfully well-preserved, clean copy of a scarce work.
