Contact seller5-star sellerSoft cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. THE PLUM PLUM PICKERS, A NOVEL, Raymond Barrio, softcover, 1971. BOOK CONDITION: Good. The text block is in near fine condition with no marks, tears, or dog ears. Foxing along top edge. There is no bookplate nor signature of previous owner. Not a library book nor remainder. Tight binding.…Orange wraps are in good condition (crinkling along edges, crease in lower right-hand corner of front cover, some curling of fore edge). 8 x 5 ¼, 202 pages, 8 ounces XX [From the back cover] PLUM is more than an account of a migrant family; it is a reflection of the Chicano's tortured soul (Mario T. Garcia, Mexican American Studies, San Jose State College, California). Barrio has done an absolutely first-rate job of describing the realities of life as it is experienced by a part of the population about whom most Americans are sadly misinformed (Paul Jacobs, writer). THE PLUM PLUM PICKERS may sound like the title of a way-out boppy book. But it is a serious and realistic portrayal of the life and conditions of the Mexican agricultural workers in the fruit country of California (The Industrial Worker). XX RAYMOND BARRIO'S social protest novel THE PLUM PLUM PICKERS (1969) remains the most anthologized work of Chicano fiction. Selections from it have appeared in more than twenty high-school and college-level textbooks. Barrio was born in West Orange, New Jersey. His parents immigrated to the United States from Spain in 1920. His father, Saturnino Barrio, born in Seville, was killed by poisonous fumes in a chemical factory in New Jersey; his mother, Angelita Santos Barrio, was from Algeciras. In unpublished correspondence Barrio explained that he and his brother lived with foster families while their mother pursued her career as a Spanish dancer, giving him a "very independent United States Protestant education, despite a Catholic birth and upbringing." He identifies with both Protestant and Catholic religious traditions. He has lived in California most of his life. A World War Two veteran, he attended various colleges including CCNY, USC, Yale, University of California at Berkeley, and Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. He has taught art at Ventura college and UC Santa Barbara, now teaches at West Valley College in Campbell.
