Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Having studied forestry at college, and later international forestry, I was aware of our author here, Richard St. Barbe Baker, who was known as one of the "Men of the Trees", long before the world became so enamored with the green side of our collective environment. I am p…leased to offer one of his books (another coming too), titled: "I Planted Trees" by Richard St. Barbe Baker, then Late Assistant Conservator of Forests in Kenya Colony nd the Southern Provinces of Nigeria. The book opens with his portrait as frontispiece (and he even looks the part!). The book is amply illustrated with "forty-six photographs by the Author." Please see the photos of the Table of Contents and the List of Illustrations for your further information. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are clean and bright, with just a slight taint of dust-dulling and with bold and bright gilt titles on the spine. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages and photo plates are clean and bright throughout, without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Photographs by the Author (illustrator).

FLORA General Conservation -Richard St. Barbe BakerÂ(9 October 1889Ââ" 9 June 1982) was an English biologist and botanist, environmental activist and author, who contributed greatly to worldwideÂreforestationÂefforts. As a leader, he founded an organisation,ÂMen…of the Trees, still active today as theÂInternational Tree Foundation, whose many chapters carry out reforestation internationally.Graduating from the Cambridge botany programme, he applied for work inÂBritish-ruled Kenya. In North Africa he saw the effects of centuries of land mismanagement, first from wheat farming in the later days of the Roman Empire and after that from the grazing of goats first introduced by Arabs. Immediately concerned with these deforestation problems, in 1922 he set up a tree nursery and founded an organisation with Kenya's Kikuyu people to carry out managed reforestation in the region, utilising native species. In the regional dialect, the local society was called "Watu wa Miti". This formed the foundation for what was to become an international organisation, theÂMen of the TreesÂ(a translation of the original name).pp. 262 reprint #060725 Baker, Richard St. Barbe, 1889-1982 Conservationists -- England -- Biography Foresters -- England -- Biography acresÂadventureÂafforestationÂAfricaÂagricultureÂancientÂarrivedÂaskedÂbambooÂbeautyÂbecomeÂbeechÂbeesÂbirdsÂBritainÂBritishÂCaliforniaÂcalledÂCanadaÂcenturyÂchiefÂCoast redwoodsÂColonialÂcropsÂculmsÂdesertÂearthÂEnglandÂfarmsÂfeetÂfelledÂforest destructionÂforestryÂfruitÂgardensÂgaveÂGermanÂgiveÂgroundÂgrovesÂgrowÂheartÂHenry Van DykeÂhorsesÂhundredÂIndian Forest ServiceÂinterestÂKenyaÂKwaheriÂlandÂleaveÂlectureÂlivingÂlookedÂLowell ThomasÂMaoriÂmeetÂmilesÂMONTEREY PINEÂmorningÂmotherÂmountainsÂnaturalÂNigeriaÂnightÂnurseryÂofficerÂonceÂorangeÂPalestineÂParkÂpassedÂpineÂplantingÂQUEBEC BEAVERÂRedwood EmpireÂredwoodsÂreturnedÂseedÂseemedÂsilviculturalÂSir John ChancellorÂsoilÂsoonÂspeciesÂspiritÂspringÂsquare milesÂstoryÂTaneÂthingsÂthoughtÂthousandÂtimberÂto-dayÂtoldÂtookÂtree-plantingÂtreesÂtribesmenÂturnedÂwantedÂwonderfulÂwoodÂwoodlandsÂyoungÂZealand Elizabeth's Bookshops have been one of Australia's premier independent book dealers since 1973.
