Bangs' account of his experiences while on the lecture circuit in America. The last chapter, "A Pioneer Manager," is a tribute to Major James Burton Pond (1838-1903), who began his lecture bureau in New York City in 1879, and over the next twenty years, became the nation's premier lecture agent. John Rea Neill (1877-1943) is primarily known for his drawings for the Oz series. BAL 807. Early owner's name in pencil on the front free endpaper. Gold lettering on spine panel quite tarnished, cloth rubbed at edges, mainly along the fore-edge of the front cover, a clean, tight, very good copy. (#167846).

His father Francis N. Bangs was a lawyer in New York City, as was his brother, Francis S. Bangs. He went to Columbia College from 1880 to 1883 where he became editor of Columbia's literary magazine, Acta Columbia, and contributed short anonymous pieces to humor magazines. After graduation in 1883 with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in Political Science, Bangs entered Columbia Law School but left in 1884 to become Associate Editor of Life under Edward S. Martin. Bangs contributed many articles and poems to the magazine between 1884 and 1888. During this period, Bangs published his first books.
