Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A "must have" for the nonfiction bookshelf of anyone interested in the role of science fiction in literary history. Per the blurb on its jacket's back, this book was "a first, trail-blazing historical and analytical study of scientific fiction and the utopian and scientific romances that describe a world remade by science." This is the 1947 Argus Books first edition, with publisher's original "$5.00" price on its dust jacket. This 77 year old book and its dust jacket are both in remarkable very good condition. The book's binding is sound and square, with no spine crease. Its covers are unmarked with bright gilt titles on its spine, marred only by bumps on its spine ends, but otherwise unworn. Pages are unmarked and unworn, with just a hint of toning in the top margins. Its dust jacket, now protected by a removable mylar cover, has a lightly toned spine, some very light wear on the ends of its spine and flap folds with a tiny chip in the top of its spine and the top of its back flap fold, plus some faint traces of soiling on its white back, but is otherwise bright, whole, unmarked and unworn. I will ship this book in a moisture proof zip-loc bag, padded in bubble cushion, inside a sturdy box to assure it reaches its new owner in the same condition as my description.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. Cover Art Ronald Clyne (illustrator). 1st Edition. Non-fiction critical study of "scientific and utopian fiction" emphasizing the 1817-1914 period. A trail-blazing historical and analytical study of scientific fiction and the utopian and scientific romances that describe a world remade by science. It makes clear that this fiction forms a solid tradition, book upon book - many pieces, like Gulliver's Travels, famous as isolated novels. Showing that these peaks belong to a range of many hills and foothills, it analyzes the shape of the range: similarities in the way the stories are told, in the substance of the stories, in the imaginary inventions they describe, and in the creeds of the authors. A must have book for the serious study of the science fiction genra's beginnings. Good to very good condition with browning pages, boards and binding are flat and square. DJ is good to very good, shows bumps on several corners, clean other than the bumps. Has Dyna-tape brail labels on back.
