Sir James Y Simpson was a noted obstetrician, but is chiefly known for the promotion of the use of chloroform as an anaesthetic. He became President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1850. This is a presentation copy inexplicably dated 1848 on half-title page.: 'To Mrs Ward with kindest remembrances JYS Edinburgh Nov 1848'.
