Giovanni Battista Roberti (1719-1786) was a Jesuit poet, a writer of religious tracts, and a Professor of Philosophy at the Universities of Placenza, Brescia, Parma, and Bologna. The title of the… present work is translated as A Little Treatise on the Little Virtues. Little virtues, Roberti explains, "are numberless; but I will give you an abridged enumeration of them, - certain indulgences, forgiving the faults of others, though we are not sure of the same pardon for ourselves; a certain dissimulation, which seems not to observe the most glaring defects, a certain sympathy, which appropriates the pains of the unhappy to lessen them; and a certain gaiety, which adopts the joys of the happy to increase them. I observe, then, in the first place, that the 'Little Virtues' are social virtues, that is to say, extremely useful to all those who live in the society of reasonable creatures" (English translation, pp. 13-15). Contemporary green cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt with floral motifs, gilt roll to covers, marbled endpapers and edges.
