First edition (first printing). Hardcover. Oblong quarto-size. Fine in fine dustjacket (sterling price 4.50 pounds intact). Along with the Ahlberg's "Each Peach Pear Plum" (1978), "Peepo" is one of the finest and most popular children's picture books of the the 20th Century. Janet Ahlberg "painted scenes with immense detail, depicting all the recognizable paraphernalia of domestic life", and in "Peepo!" the Ahlbergs uses peepholes in each page so that the child can spy what is coming next. The book depicts a 1940s British working class home with amusing accuracy, full of cosy clutter and with a father in military uniform. Allan Ahlberg (born in 1938) has said he identifies very much with the baby in the story. Wonderful colour illustrations. An 'already-classic' becoming uncommon in this condition.
