Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. The story of New York City through the Fireman's eyes. Dunshee, Kenneth Holcomb. As You Pass By. New York: Hastings House, 1952. First Edition (no later printings indicated). Quarto, extensively illustrated with color plates, maps, photographs, and a deta…iled 'Firemen's Guide' map printed on the rear endpapers. Copyright page states 1952 with no subsequent printings noted; no book club indicators present. The Hastings House imprint and production details are consistent with a true first issue. A richly illustrated mid-century exploration of early New York City, this work blends narrative history with visual documentation of streets, institutions, and especially the development of the fire service. Drawing on archival materials, engravings, and contemporary accounts, Dunshee reconstructs the character of Old New York with particular emphasis on civic life and urban transformation. Particularly notable is the large 'Firemen's Guide' map printed on the rear endpapers, illustrating early New York fire districts, stations, and infrastructure, alongside numerous full-page and double-page plates. Of particular interest, this copy bears a period distribution imprint indicating it was issued through the Uniformed Firemen's Association with 'Christmas Greetings,' with acknowledgment of the Home Insurance Company. This provenance aligns directly with the subject matter and reflects a connection to active-duty fire service personnel, enhancing its appeal to collectors of New York and firefighting history. Book is in Near Fine condition: clean green cloth boards with sharp corners, tight and square binding, and bright, unmarked pages throughout. All plates and illustrations are present and intact. The original dust jacket is present and complete but in Fair condition, showing heavy edge wear, chipping, tearing, and areas of loss, particularly along the spine ends and extremities; however, it remains structurally complete and retains visual appeal. Kenneth Holcomb Dunshee (1900-1964) was an American historian and curator specializing in early urban and firefighting history. He served as curator of the H. V. Smith Museum of the Home Insurance Company and was associated with the American Museum of Firefighting, assembling significant archival collections related to the fire service. His work is noted for combining anecdotal narrative with detailed topographical and historical research, particularly focused on New York City's development and civic institutions. Author's obituary included in photos provided for reference only (not contained within the book.).
