Only 1500 copies of Milton's two epic poems were printed by Baskerville in 1758 as the third product. In the preface to Paradise Lost, Baskerville discusses his objectives as a printer and announces his intent to print the Anglican Book of Common Prayer and his most renowned work, the folio Bible. The list of subscribers includes Benjamin Franklin among many others. This copy of Paradise Lost has the corrected page 135, rather than 13 as in some of the earliest copies. Paradise Regain'd is followed by Samson Agonistes, 19 short poems, 23 sonnets, and 19 psalms. full contemporary calf, double borders stamped in blind, five raised bands, gilt on spines, top edges stained black, others marbled.

Spines quite handsome with compartment decorations in gilt, red morocco labels lettered in gilt. Edges and extremities of boards somewhat worn. Most remarkably a severe burn affects the fore edge of the front cover of the Paradise Lost volume with only faint traces to the bindings elsewhere, although no sign of any heat damage at all to the textblock. Some evidence of period leather repair at hinges and extremities. Top edge dust-darkened. The runners, which were once decorated in gilt, are rubbed. Inner dentelles blindstamped. Early signs of starting at front gutter of Paradise Lost, boards remain entirely secure. Previous owner's calligraphic initials small at the head of the title page of each volume. Internally the textblock is remarkably clean, with only the lightest foxing to title pages and occasional elsewhere. Volumes remain sharp with only occasional pencil marginalia. The list of subscribers names is present in Paradise Lost volume, as is Book III / line 3 correction. Printed by JOHN BASKERVILLE.
