La "Linotype Company" (azienda tuttora esistente) nacque nel 1899, per iniziativa dell'editore Joseph Lawrence, che aprì diversi stabilimenti in Inghilterra (il più importante era quello di Manchester), e si unì poi alla "Machinery Trust Ltd", unificando le due denominazioni, con filiali in tutto l'impero coloniale britannico.
